Here’s one for the books: A north Florida fishing guide has been cited for allegedly tying the beaks of pelicans shut after the birds interfered with his crew’s catches, the Panama City News Herald reported Wednesday (March 11). Larry Francis Lemieux Jr., 37, was cited by undercover Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers March 1 after they said they saw him wrapping the beaks of two brown pelicans with fishing line before releasing the birds, according to the incident report. The officers also reported finding one dead pelican on the shore with similar fishing line tied around its beak.. Lemieux was cited on charges of misdemeanor cruelty to animals and taking a species of special concern, namely brown pelicans, the report said. He denied the allegations, even though the officers were reportedly eye witnesses.
