1,226.5 Kona Blue

Konao

Red hot fishing in Kona Hawaii continues as Capt. Chip Van Mols struck gold for the 4th time catching a 1,226.5 blue marlin on May 27th aboard the 40′ Gamefishermen Luna.  Capt Van Mols, along with longtime deckhand Shawn Bebeau, placed angler Dean Lemman in the hot seat when a giant blue crushed his short corner Aloha Lure smash bait.  After a 2 hour and 10 minute battle, the magnificent fish died and was boated. Amazingly, this was the 4th, and largest grander for Van Mols, who has fished Kona’s calm cerulean waters for the past 26 years.  His blue marlin grander resume now includes 1,062, 1,064, 1,165 and 1,226.5, and seven  fish over 900.  When  approached, the happy captain’s  first words were  “How lucky am I ? ”  Appearing humbled by the fact that compared to many lifetime captains, he has been fishing for a relatively short period of time and is extremely fortunate to have the honor to catch four grander blues. One thing for certain is that Van Mols and Bebeau are a true testimony to teamwork. The two have been fishing for over eight years together. Bebeau, aka “The Cobra”, is also an accomplished captain in his own right. Born and raised in Hawaii, Bebeau has now caught  2 grander blues with Van Mols, and has three 900 pound blues under his belt, not to mention a host of other fishing accomplishments. One thing for certain is Van Mols believes in his lure sets and the perfection of placement. It has paid big dividends for him many times over the years.  I have fished successfully with him multiple times over the years and appreciate the fact he feels lucky.  I also recognize the fact that he is a damn good captain ! Add a little luck with good experience and the results are usually rewarding. Congrats to all involved. It’s important to note that Hawaiian waters are home to the biggest blues this year. This is the second grander of the year in Kona, and another  grander ( I don’t have all the details) , a 1,058  blue, was caught off Maui  two days ago. Hence, if you want to catch blue marlin,  Hawaii is the place to do it! It’s easy to get to, we speak English here, its a tropical paradise,  you don’t need a passport, and most importantly – you catch fish.  And lots of times, REALLY BIG FISH ! Aloha, Mark Johnston
