The Guana Cay leg of the 2016 Bahamas Billfish Championship went off without a hitch last week, concluding with an exciting awards dinner at Sunsetters restaurant at Orchid Bay Marina where Bamboo, owned by Bill Canida, took top honors. Wave Paver (owned by Jr. Davis and captained by Russell Sinclair) and Sandrita (owned by Kevin Fish and captained by Kyle Sherman) took second and third place, respectively. The 40 Cabo Bamboo started off the tournament releasing a blue marlin on day one. They went on to release 2 white marlin on day two and capped off the win releasing 2 blue marlin and a sailfish on day 3. Wave Paver, a 61 Garlington, made the scoreboard all 3 days as well releasing a blue on day one, a white marlin on day two and a white and a blue on the 3rd day. The 62 Ocean Sandrita released 2 blues and a white to give them the 3rd place win. In response to participant input the BBC made some changes this year to the point structure. Blue Marlin remain 600 points per release, white marlin are now 100 points and sailfish are 50 points. Also new this year is the $5000 Grand Slam Bonus. The prize will be awarded to the first boat in each leg to catch a blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish in one day. Back by popular demand is the $1 Million Dollar Marlin! The BBC will issue the award to the angler that catches a blue marlin that breaks the current Bahamas record of 1119 pounds. A big thanks to the tournament major sponsors, which included: AIG, Costa, ZF Marine, Vetus-Maxwell, Aqualuma, Roff, Starbrite, Huk Performance Fishing, Required Team Gear, Black Bart Lures, and Silver Airways. All of those brands worked in coordination to make sure the tournament had great resources and great parties. Anglers are looking forward to the next leg of the series, which takes place in Marsh Harbour at the Abaco Beach Resort on May 18th 21st, and promises to have tons of fish, lots of fierce competition, and a whole lot of fun! Anglers Journal Television will be filming an episode during this event. AJ TV begins airing in July. We will be airing the inaugural episode at a special premier during the Boat Harbour Championship.
