Captain of the Year Cup: What You Need to Know

InTheBite cup logo web

The InTheBite Captain of the Year Cup is the evolution of ITB traditional championship.  The Cup is divided into five divisions (so far) and is developed to allow captains and crews to compete on even playing fields.  By dividing tournament participants into regions, the variability of fish numbers is accounted for.  In a global blue marlin numbers competition, boats fishing in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Cape Verde would win nearly every year.  By creating divisions, it is the skill and consistency of the captains and crews that is recognized— not only the fishiness of the water. The COTY Cup is a billfish only competition that awards points to captains fishing in sanctioned tournaments.  Currently there are 107 tournaments sanctioned.  The scoring is simple: 500 points for 1st, 500 points for heaviest marlin, 300 for 2nd, and 100 for 3rd.  The Overall Champion of a sanctioned Tournament Series (BBC, Gulf Coast Championship, etc.) is awarded an additional 250 points.  The season runs from January 1- December 31 each year. The five divisions are: East Coast, Florida, Gulf Coast, Hawaii, and International.  As the sportfishing world leader in recognizing sportfishing professionals, ITB is honored to chronicle and catalogue the breadth of the tournament landscape. Inthebite.com displays the rules, up to date divisional standings, a list of sanctioned tournaments, and often posts a TGIF Captain of the Year Cup update on Fridays.  Whether you are keeping track of your favorite fishing team or charting next year tournament calendar, the InTheBite Captain of the Year Cup and associated resources provides you with tools that you cant find anywhere else.   For complete information visit the Captain of the Year Cup webpage.
