Bonefish Hawaiian Style

July 23, 2014 By InTheBite Contributor

Hennessy, Mike, big bonefish (2) 1.23

Mike Hennessy with nice bonefish off Oahu

Did you know  Hawaii has incredible bonefishing? I didn’t, until I did a story on a grander blue marlin caught off Oahu several years ago. After discussing  the monster blue, the conversation somehow switched to big bonefish. Spending a good portion of my life fishing in the Bahamas – I was a little skeptical of the claims of  round jaw (common) bonefish up to 20 lbs., shots at fish everyday over 10 lbs. and average fish weighing in the 6-9 lb. range. That is-  until I saw it for myself and continue to see it with regular updates from the area.

If you are ever on the island of Oahu – bonefishing is a must-do !  Oahu has  four large  areas to fish, with over 30 flats ranging in size from small pancake flats to 6 mile connecting flats and barrier reefs.  Bluefin trevelle and golden trevelle also abound and eat the same mantis shrimp fly patterns used for big bonefish. The trevelle  get up to 15 lbs.. The rare sharp jaw bonefish can be caught off Oahu too.

One thing that makes  Hawaii a great bonefishing destination is that it’s easy to get to with relatively cheap flights to Honolulu. There are a ton of fun things to do and you can choose from different priced  places to stay. It’s easy to find  hotels of every quality and great rental houses (VBRO.com)  with close  proximity to the  beautiful Hawaiian beaches. There are plenty of spas for the girls, fine dining, shopping,  waterfalls, dolphins and whales,  excellent offshore fishing and of course -sunsets on the beach with a Mai Tai. It’s perfect for people who fish and for those who don’t !

Personally, I would I recommend staying in Kailua or Lanikai. These are fun, uncrowded beach towns with great restaurants. The guide I would highly recommend is Mike Hennessy.  He or one of his guides will even pick you up at your place,  making it easier when you are sharing a rental car with those who don’t plan on fishing.  Mike is an excellent blue water fishermen too , with grander blue marlin and major marlin  tournament wins under his belt. It’s also worth noting that his daughter is  a world-class surfer.

For more information contact Capt. Mike Hennessy. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have and is a great guy.
