TGIF Captain’s Cup July 4th Update

TGIF Captain’s Cup July 4th Update We’ve reached the halfway point in 2014 and the Captain of the Year Cup divisions are still up for grabs. Just 350 points represents the largest lead in any division and that’s currently held by the 2013 Captain of the Year, Wink Doerzbacher in the idle Florida Division. The East Coast Division is currently knotted up with Capt. Dan Woody, Syked Out and Capt. Mike Glaesner, Sportin Life with 800 points. The Mega Dock Billfishing Tournament is July 9-12 out of Charleston, SC and the South Carolina Governors Cup Championship points are also at stake (there’s a bonus of 250 points for winning a sanctioned championship series and the Governor’s Cup is on that list). Captain Eddie Wheeler from the Marlin Darlin holds a 300-point lead in the International Division but with several Bermuda events slated in the next couple of weeks it will be interesting to see if Wheeler gets dialed in and continues his streak internationally. Over on the Big Island of Kona, Hawaii Capt. Chip Van Mols on the Luna is the first to lead the Hawaii Division–his team weighed a 663.5 lb. blue marlin to help win the Kona Kickoff. There’s a good chance that Hawaii could once again take the World Cup title on July 4th as well–those 500 Captain of the Year Cup points could go a long way in deciding the winner of the Hawaii Division. In the Gulf of Mexico, the Done Deal’s Capt. Jason Buck leads by 300 points over Capt. Devon Potts on the Sea Mixer. The Pensacola International Billfish Tournament is taking place and lines are in for the weekend. Also, the Gulf Cup and World Cup could easily come from one of the teams fishing in the Gulf so its not that far-fetched to think a big girl could catapult one team to the top with 500 points each from the Gulf Cup and World Cup. Have a safe holiday weekend–well sort this all out next week when the smoke clears! Capt D! showtime
