In The Spread
“We’re live baiting in the tournaments a lot these days, probably about 95 percent of the time. A few years ago if we had to move from one rig to another we would troll lures but now we pick up and run instead—more of a “run and gun” live-bait strategy than spending a lot of time trolling. We typically use Shimano 130s but we’ll use lighter tackle when trolling for smaller billfish in release tournaments too.”
Techniques
“To catch our bait we’re using diamond jigs and butterfly jigs, dropping them down in the lights real early in the morning. The rig is pretty simple: we’re using 300- to 400-pound leader and circle hooks from 13/0 to 20/0 depending on the size of the bait. Snell the hook to 30 feet of leader, bridle up the bait and that’s it. We start watching the areas we want to fish a week before, watching ROFFS and Hilton’s for good water. We also like to pick an area that has a lot of options to fish—that way if one spot doesn’t look good when we get there, we can relocate to another pretty fast without wasting a whole lot of time running.”
