November 21, 2014: The Sanctioned tournament action this weekend will be in the Contender Florida Division with the two day Palm Beach Sailfish Classic November 21-23. The conditions this weekend are calling for winds east 20-25 which is not the perfect scenario for sailfish action but as most boat owners will you tell you- you can’t catch em at the dock. Captain Wink Doerzbacher and the Showtime team have been practicing the last couple of weeks and are ready to make a run at the Contender Florida Division title. The Showtime team has a 350 point lead in the Division with only a few events left. This weeks Crew Spotlight is team Syked Out who finished Ranked #4 in the East Coast Division. Capt. Dan Woody, Syked Out Boat/Power: Viking 56, 3412 CATs 2014 Wins: Georgetown Blue Marlin Tournament, 2nd Place, 300 Pts; Bohicket Billfish Tournament, 1st Place, 500 Pts. Tackle: Alutecnos 50s and 80s, Shimano Tyrnos 20s, custom rods w/ high-vis line Capt. Dan Woody has been having a great year on the Skyed Out so far, fishing the South Carolina Governor Cup events among others along the South Carolina coast. Technique Were pulling pretty fast for blue marlin but well slow down when we start concentrating on sailfish and the blues move out, he reports. Other tactics include finding good water loaded with bait. Off South Carolina were not fishing real deep, he says. I look for pretty water and a color change but I would rather fish around bait”that the key. In The Spread One secret to his success has been to mix in lures to a spread of dredges and dink baits. We pull two American Custom Lures from the short riggers, he says. One of my two mates, Jeff Jones, makes the lures so weve been getting some terrific information on hooksets, speeds, rigging and more. Our hookup ratio has gone from less than 50 percent to over 75 percent on lures, which is phenomenal. The team rotates between the Banshee and a 444 models in custom colors on their short riggers in addition to four dink ballyhoo and a pair of natural bait dredges swimming deep. The lures are armed with 7/0 39951 hooks in custom hooksets and the trolling speeds range from seven to eight knots.
