Splash Report: Hatteras GT70by Capt. Dale Wills I recently had the pleasure of taking the all-new Hatteras GT70 out for a sea trial and will say that the boat is very impressive. The five-stateroom layout is well thought out and I especially liked the dual engine room access from the cockpit into a split stateroom layout of the crews quarters forward of the engine room. The crew, who are always up earlier than everyone else, can easily access the engine room for any reason and exit through the engine room without the guests ever hearing or even knowing about it. The guest and master staterooms are large with clean, ergonomic lines which you can see from the photo gallery. The salon and galley give you an airy open feeling that makes it seem like the boat is much larger. You and your guests can have drinks, lunch or dinner together without feeling confined. Like most mezzanines and cockpits in the 70-foot class, the space is ample. Chilling at the dock or fishing a full crew in a tournament, the cockpit is very comfortable. The tackle center, drink box and icemaker are all within an arm reach and your guests will not need to move up or over to access any of these. The bridge and helm provide the captain with easy access to the electronics. The vantage point of the helm provides the captain with a great view of the bow while underway. Looking aft at the cockpit and the spread while fishing should have any captain calling out the bites before the anglers feel the fish: you can see everything from the bridge. Just as impressive was the lack of prop wash behind the GT70 at trolling speed. Eyeing a dredge or flatline marlin bite is going to be fun on this rig. The GT70 is ideal for a family and guests to pack up and spend an extensive trip together without feeling confined. I also envision this boat as ideal to provision for an extended trip to fish the FADs off Costa Rica or the oil rigs well offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. You wont have guests sleeping all over the salon and couches with five staterooms. Performance and range are not an issue. The 2,600hp MTU engines and 3,000-gallon fuel capacity are enough for any sportfishing owner to point her in the direction you want to go while cruising at 30 knots(1850 rpm/140 gph) and enjoying a trip of a lifetime. The Hatteras pedigree and sea-keeping muscle of the GT70 have combined to make it one of the most impressive Hatteras models to date. Check this one out and enjoy the ride!
