Screen shot 2014-01-08 at 5.16.55 PMFeb 5, 2015 As anticipated, the sailfish bite returned to Isla Mujeres after a strong northerly blow last week. Once the winds settled, boats found sailfish both near and far. For the guys opting to stay close to home, 10-15 bites could be found within a 10 mile run of the marina. For the others that pushed up the road, banner days were recorded by many. Like any fishery, however, no two days are the same. We experienced lulls for a few days when the fishing got tough and no one knew where the fish had gone. But thanks to the perseverance of many of the hard charging charter boats from Enrique Marina, the guys were able to once again locate the body of fish. One of the things I enjoy about fishing here in Isla is the friendly nature of the fleet and the ability of everyone fishing to network in order to locate where the Sailfish are congregated. Providing everyone maintains proper etiquette, once the fish are found, there is usually enough for everyone. In addition to the sails, there is also a fair amount of Blackfin Tuna and Wahoo bites to keep things interesting and provide some table fare for folks visiting the island. Unlike a lot of other places and due to the laid back, non-competitive nature of the fleet, flags indicating number of catches are not flown here. With that being said, it is difficult to gather exact release numbers of a given day. Generally speaking, most boats that ventured North were able to release an average of 15-30+ sailfish a day. With the amount of bait around, it is hopeful that the great fishing continues through February. Some notable catches for the week Capt. Newt Cagle on the Dirty Business released 29/52 bites on Superbowl Sunday and the Sea Hag catching 29 as well on Monday. Lots of charter boats here with open dates. Check out Dirty Business, Obsession, Qualifier, Haphazard, Keen M or Sea Hag. All of these guys are able to get it done!
