The term pontoon racers might conjure a comical image of the popular family boats puttering along a lake. But each summer during the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, an emerging class of pontoons ” rigged with multiple high-horse outboards ” duels for the top spot. Brad Rowland recently claimed the Top Toon prize with an amazing 114-mph run. Rowland boat, named Tooned In, is a 25-foot 2010 South Bay tritoon powered with triple Mercury Promax 300X outboards. Somewhat scarier, Rowland has a need for even more speed. People freak out when they see me come down the lake that fast in a pontoon, Rowland told the Lake Expo News. I see 120 mph not out of my reach.
