Capt. Jason Hallmark has been having a great season to date on the Rise Up, owned by Rusty Skalla. They are making a concerted run at the Gulf Coast Triple Crown and also Captain of the Year trophies in the Gulf of Mexico this year. In The Spread We do about half and half lure fishing and live baiting. When were trolling, we fish a mix of Moldcrafts, Pakulas and a few others with a mudflap teaser and maybe a naked ballyhoo way back down the middle. We dont dead bait fish all that much. As far as colors we like a lot of purple and black. Straight red is good and we also have a Moldcraft that solid orange that we call Big O”that one caught a lot of marlin. We run it right from the chair just out of the propwash in the center of the spread. When were live baiting were using 18/0 to 20/0 circle hooks, depending on the size of the bait, on 300-pound leader. This is our first season on the new boat and it has much better custom tuna tubes, we can keep our bait in better shape a whole lot longer than we could with the old tubes. Were talking 12 to 14 hours compared with two or three with the old set. It a huge difference. Technique I dont like fishing around a bunch of other boats so I will try to find someplace where we can fish by ourselves. If I know a lot of guys are going to a certain rig or a rip then Ill go in a different direction to get away from the pack. The fish we caught in Orange Beach, there was one other boat already on the rig and they hadnt had a bite all day. We werent going to stay long so we pulled up, put the baits out and caught our fish right next to him. I kinda felt bad but I would have to say it because we had fresher bait that was in better shape because of our new tubes. pic 2 pic 4
