Captain Randy Baker Sets New Blue Marlin Record

July 18, 2015: Here’s an incredible story how the Nomad crew found a tree on the way to fishing the FADS in Costa Rica and helped Randy Baker become the only person to release 20 blue marlin in a single day in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. “Wilson” Creates FAD For Epic Trip Off Costa Rica As told by Captain Randy Baker: “While still chugging out to a seamount the first day I found a floating log at daylight. After catching fresh bait off of it we started live baiting until we got some pitch baits rigged. First 6 baits in the water got shark bit. Got the teasers out and after the second or third pass it was Game On! Caught 4 double headers that day. The amount of bait around the log was incredible. We drifted near the log the first night, lost track of it next morning and took a couple of hours to re-find. After that I never got out of visual sight of it, not an easy task, and we tied off to it at night, the sea life in the lights at night were truly impressive. At the end of the third day after catching 23 blues and continuing to keep an eye on the log all day I named it Wilson. It became the saying onboard, Where Wilson, Dont lose Wilson!! On the fourth day in the afternoon a trash line pushed thru and we found a 15 foot stick of bamboo, and made a high-flier with an aluminum pan for a radar reflector and black flag, we got it lashed onto Wilson that night, after that keeping track of it was a breeze. We fished Wilson for 6 days and drifted over 100 miles with it, all of our fish were caught off of it, pitch baiting. It was an epic trip and one none of us will ever forget.” Capt. Randy Baker Nomad Captain Randy Baker was on the Hooker when the crew released 20 Atlantic Blue Marlin June 1, 1997 off Cape Verde with Captain Trevor Cockle. Ronnie Fields was also a deckhand.
