Reinvent the Wheel New trim tab system rethinks boat stability by Ric Burnley If it aint broke, dont fix it. Well, next time you break a trim tab, dont fix it, replace it. Traditional trim tabs use a metal plate pushed by a hydraulic cylinder to change the dynamics of the hull and adjust how the boat handles. The system takes incredible abuse and often suffers damage. Humphree adjustable interceptors perform the same function as trim tabs and then some. On a recent visit to Humphree North American headquarters in Virginia Beach, Kent Lundgren showed me how the system works. Interceptors are composite blades mounted to the transom of the boat, he explained. The unit looked to be three feet long and a four inches thick. The blades ride inside a housing unit and are controlled by a single, electric shaft.
