The Squidnation Slammer is the latest product produced at the request of some highly regarded offshore fishermen. The idea was to produce a head big enough to chug yet small enough to not impede the performance of a 7/0 or 8/0 circle hook. We measured the gap of a 7/0 eagle Claw Circle Hook and decided on a lure that is slightly smaller in head diameter then the hook gap. We also tapered the line hole so that it is much wider in the back to fit the beak of a ballyhoo and barrel swivel when rigging as a swivel rig. The swivel fits halfway into the head being stopped by the reducing taper to allow the loop end of the barrel swivel to fit sit on the chugger head for easy access to the circle hook. So how have the new little Slammers worked?
We first tested the Slammers in the Flor De Cana International Billfish Tournament in Nicaragua on the Tranquilo. Our team won first place and set a tournament record with 127 sailfish releases. Next we tested them on a trip to Cap Cana on the Natural with Capt Chuck Gregory. On the 2nd day we went almost exclusively with the Slammers and medium bally and broke the Cap Cana Record with 14 Blue Marlin released in a day. That record has subsequently been topped again. Next we took the Slammers to the 22nd El Salvador International Billfish Tournament on the Tranquilo. The crew won the sailfish division using a combination 50/50 naked ballyhoo and bally topped with slammers. The crew set a tournament record with 117 sailfish releases and a one day record of 50 releases. In all test trips the Squidnation Slammers proved to be an improvement of hook up ratios for the crew.
