Looking Back: The Emergence of the Release Boatworks 46

The Release Boatworks 46 was one of the first boats in her class to be designed from the keel up to utilize pod drives. Release has embraced this technology with a vengeance, developing what would become the marine industry benchmark for maneuverability, fuel efficiency and performance. When the Release 46 was introduced, it was quickly noticed as a beautiful boat on the water, with lines reminiscent of Rybovich and Merritt. From the unbroken sheer line to the gentle curve of her transom tumblehome, she became a definite head-turner and while beneath those clean, classic lines lies were some of the most modern technological advances in boatbuilding available today.

The Release 46 made her debut during the 2012 Miami International Boat Show, where hull no. 1, Gold Fish, was on display for demo rides. Her maneuverability became truly unmatched by any vessel with conventional drives, and the fuel economy was equally impressive: With the Cummins QSM-11 power option, the 46 cruises at 32 knots burning 42 gallons per hour total at 2,100 rpms. She tops out at 38 knots, turning 2,500 rpms and burning 75 gallons per hour.
