Grander-sized Pacific Blue Marlin Caught off Coast of Oahu

On June 22, Captain Tony Brown with Boom Boom Sportfishing and his crew caught an impressive 1,040-pound Pacific blue marlin four miles off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii. The experience was especially memorable for Tony and his crew because their deckhand family was the charter group that day.

We were less than four miles from the harbor when the long corner bait took off! I looked back to see a huge Pacific Blue Marlin airborne, perpendicular to the boat,” Tony recalls. “We backed down to avoid being spooled as the Dacron backing appeared. We fought for an hour to get back to the monofilament top shot on the reel. The fish took off again, taking us back down to the Dacron. As we fought, we noticed that she wasnt running anymore, yet we were slowly losing line…More than three hours passed before we finally saw the leader, followed by the fish. It took four of us to pull it halfway through the boat fish door, which was almost too narrow for the monster of a fish. We called it good enough after getting â…” of the fish onboard and headed the 3.5 miles back to the harbor…We hung the fish from the harbor hoist, did measurements (over 13 long and over 6 wide), and using scientific and Hawaiian measurement methods, figured out that we had finally caught a grander! It was an epic experience and I cant wait to do it again!
