Splash Report: Hatteras GT70
by Capt. Dale Wills
I recently had the pleasure of taking the all-new Hatteras GT70 out for a sea trial and will say that the boat is very impressive. The five-stateroom layout is well thought out and I especially liked the dual engine room access from the cockpit into a split stateroom layout of the crews quarters forward of the engine room. The crew, who are always up earlier than everyone else, can easily access the engine room for any reason and exit through the engine room without the guests ever hearing or even knowing about it. HATTERAS YACHTS UNVEILS THE DETAILS OF THE
ALL-NEW GT65 CAROLINA
NEW BERN, NC– Sept. 24, 2018 – Hatteras/CABO Yachts LLC (“Hatteras Yachts”), a world leader in the construction of convertible sportfishing and luxury motor yachts from 45 to 105 feet, today released more details about the all-new Hatteras GT65 Carolina. This is the newest addition to its proven GT Series tournament-ready sportfishing boats, which includes the GT70, GT63, GT59, GT54 and GT45X. The new GT65 Carolina will replace the GT63 and signals a new design direction, enhanced performance and custom features for clients seeking an alternative to either a custom builder or other competitors’ ordinary off-the-shelf boats. The new GT65 Carolina is scheduled to debut in Fall 2019.
“Hatteras caters to customers who expect the most from their boats,” said Hatteras/CABO President and CEO Kelly T. Grindle. “The GT65 Carolina will exceed the demands of the most avid angler. The boat will feature a cockpit, mezzanine and interior with greater volume, as well as higher performance in real-world conditions.”
The first renderings of the new Hatteras GT65 reveal a sleek profile that refreshes the look of the GT Series while still maintaining its core Hatteras DNA. Its new flybridge arrangement features an ergonomically designed console that puts all the controls within easy reach. It also incorporates the latest and largest navigation and fishfinding electronics in a non-glare, flush-mounted, “glass cockpit” helm array.
The GT65 Carolina’s added volume is evident in its class-leading 194-square foot cockpit, which is designed for ultimate fishability. The mezzanine incorporates optional integrated seatback air conditioning for all-day comfort, and large stainless steel built-in storage boxes.
The GT65 Carolina’s four-stateroom, three-head interior layout maximizes the boat’s additional volume in both living and storage space. The ensuite master stateroom is the largest in its class, but guests billeted in the forward VIP will not feel slighted in the least. Two big bunk rooms allow owners to bring along a big team of anglers and crew.
But the GT65 Carolina’s key advantage over the competition lies in its new hull and tunnel design. Utilizing high-tech Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, Hatteras’ team of engineers optimized hull form to ensure superior performance, handling and seaworthiness. In addition, the hull and stringer system will be infused as a single part, an industry first, to reduce weight and increase strength. The GT65 Carolina incorporates an all-new layout of the engine room for ease of maintenance and serviceability. For owners seeking additional comfort, there is also an optional twin Seakeeper 9 installation, without compromising fuel capacity.
Hatteras Yachts is building the first GT65 Carolina, due in Fall 2019, for tournament-winning sportfishing couple Chris and Laura Jessen, owners of Fish Tank Sportfishing. The Jessens have had tremendous success campaigning their Hatteras GT63 Fish Tank since 2012. Chris and Laura, along with Fish Tank’s award-winning captain, Ben Horning, are collaborating with Hatteras on the new Fish Tank, and the builder has given them the opportunity to customize it to meet their competitive needs. The result is the GT65 Carolina, a tournament-ready sportfishing boat that embodies the best boatbuilding traditions of the brand and state that spawned it, along with features forged by the Jessens’ years of tournament-angling experience.
Additional features available on the GT65 Carolina include:
The first GT65 Carolina, Fish Tank owned by Chris and Laura Jessen, also will incorporate custom features such as: tower with carbon fiber hardtop and buggy top, tuna tubes, and a custom wood interior.
“We’re thrilled to partner with the team of seasoned engineers and boat builders at Hatteras to ensure the GT65 Carolina will continue to enhance our competitive sportfishing lifestyle,” said Chris Jessen .
“I’m thrilled with the collaborative results of the project team, including: Hatteras engineers and designers, Chris and Laura Jessen, Capt. Ben Horning, Scott Roberton and Pete Havens,” said Kelly T. Grindle. “The GT65 Carolina will be second-to-none.”

Hatteras Yachts Announces New GT59 Convertible
New Bern, N.C. – September 15, 2017 – Hatteras/Cabo Yachts LLC (“Hatteras Yachts”), a world leader in the construction of convertible sportfishing and luxury motor yachts from 45 to 100 feet, announced the new Hatteras GT59 Convertible model at the Hatteras Club Experience event at Hatteras Yachts Headquarters in New Bern. The GT59 is the newest addition to the Hatteras GT Series of tournament-ready sportfishing yachts, which also includes the GT45X, GT54, GT63 and GT70. Scheduled to launch in 2018, the GT59 represents the next evolution of the GT Series, showcasing a new aesthetic exterior design and enhanced interior arrangements.
“We are building on the success of the Hatteras GT Series and taking it to the next level with the new GT59,” said Hatteras/CABO Yachts President and CEO Kelly Grindle. “Our customers were asking for a Hatteras GT Series Convertible in the 55- to 60-foot range to round out our line. With this model, we are offering them not only a boat that will deliver the same high level of performance and fishability as the rest of the GT Series, but also one with an updated interior and flexible lower-deck accommodation plans. It’s built for fishing, while also offering the premium fit and finish and amenities of a luxury motor yacht.
The yacht’s interior features a flush-deck salon/galley with island layout designed to facilitate social traffic flow. It is equally suited to feeding a hungry crew and staging an elegant cocktail party. Grindle added, “The open, free-flowing salon/galley arrangement is truly unique in the sportfish segment, allowing customers to feel comfortable during extended fishing trips.”
Flexible arrangements for the lower deck will let individual owners personalize the GT59 to suit their fishing and cruising styles and needs. The standard layout encompasses nearly equivalent VIP and master staterooms, plus a bunkroom that can accommodate a captain and deckhand, a couple of fishing buddies, or the grandkids. One optional layout optimizes the boat’s fishability by placing tackle storage space with workbench to starboard of the companionway stairs, while another adds a third head.
Like its GT Series siblings, the GT59 has a spacious, well-laid-out flybridge that places the captain in the optimal spot for viewing the action in the cockpit and the waters surrounding the boat. However, the new model features a new flybridge layout that places a lounge forward of the helm concealing a huge storage compartment that can be converted to a freezer.
GT Series boats are designed to deliver top speeds of over 40 knots and to cruise in the mid-30-knot range. Their proven variable-degree deadrise hull begins with knifelike entry for slicing through head seas, then gradually flattens out toward the transom, creating less drag and more lift for exhilarating speed and better fuel economy. Lifting strakes combined with the chine configuration make for a dry ride even in the rough stuff offshore. Hull tunnels, aft, help the GT models back down straight and true, while keeping the cockpit dry. The hullform also allows them to maintain cruising speed in rougher conditions than many competitor sportfishing boats.
Sportfishing captains also love the GT Series convertibles for their sportscar-like maneuverability, which results from the GT Series hullform combined with the standard differential steering system. Most of all, captains and owner/operators love the Hatteras GT Series boats for their excellent seakeeping abilities, which help them safely navigate inclement seas.
Fishability is assured by the GT Series’ large, clean, highly functional cockpits. The GT59 has a 153-square foot cockpit with full mezzanine seating. Standard fishing features include a transom door, molded-in transom live well, two insulated fish boxes with macerator, rod stowage, and a mounting plate for a fighting chair. The mezzanine incorporates a bait and tackle center with drawers, bait freezer, and a refrigerated drinks box.
The engine room and other utility spaces will embody the craftsmanship and attention to detail that are enduring Hatteras hallmarks. Taking that tradition and building on it, GT59 will be a worthy next-generation heir to the legendary Hatteras sportfishing yacht line.

The dealer, which has sales offices in Dania Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach Gardens, and Stuart, Fla., will offer the full range of new Hatteras Yachts from 45 to 100 feet.

“We are delighted that Denison Yacht Sales, located in Southeast Florida’s major yachting and sport fishing region, is now carrying the Hatteras flag in this strategically important market,” said John Ward, president & CEO of Hatteras Yachts. “Bob Denison and his team bring decades of experience to the table, and we look forward to working with them at the Palm Beach Boat Show and in the future.”
“Hatteras is one of the highest quality boats built in America, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Denison. “We are thrilled to represent Hatteras at the upcoming Palm Beach Show, where the new 70 Motor Yacht, which is having its Palm Beach Premiere; the GT70 flagship HATTERASCAL; the 60 Motor Yacht, and the 45 Express LITTLERASCAL will be on display. This gives us the opportunity for a great start in our relationship with Hatteras Yachts.”
Denison Yacht Sales, which has 17 sales offices worldwide, recently opened a new location at The Quay on SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale. Its other Hatteras Yachts sales offices include its locations at Soverel Harbour Marina in Palm Beach Gardens, Loggerhead Marine in Stuart, and Harbour Towne Marina in Dania Beach. “Hatteras Yachts has made significant investments in new product development, marketing and in building out the Pier Sixty-Six sales office. These efforts have to come fruition, and as a result Hatteras has experienced tremendous momentum in recent months. In fact, sales over the past five months have been the best in recent memory,” Ward said. “And now, with the help of Denison Yacht Sales, we expect to see this momentum continue at the Palm Beach Show and throughout the Southeast Florida market.”
It may be her classic lines. Or perhaps it is her logical interior layout. But no matter what it is, the GT70 will have traditional and modern elements that will surely impress at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show this October.
On schedule to debut this fall, is the anticipated Hatteras GT70, the newest model of the popular GT series. Dennis Barker, Hatteras GT Construction Manager states, “we are making great progress. This week the 2600BHP MTU engines were set for the final finish. We chose to use an upgraded engine on this model, intended for more horsepower and speed, something our customers have been looking for. However, we do have the option to use the standard CAT C-32A 1900 horsepower. Both engines are ideal for covering vast distances- for those weekend trips with the family to the Bahamas or extended fishing tournaments ready to endure any type of seas.”
”While the structural bones of the GT70 are progressing, Hatteras in-house interior designer, Cullen Moser, continues to plan the interior styling of each space. “Our five stateroom, four head layout with flexibility for crew’s quarters, will have the traditional GT styling and performance with an elevated and innovative look and feel.”
Hatteras team members diligently worked with existing GT customers to perfect the styling of the new GT70. All have contributed useful feedback making the GT70 an impressive design, made to outperform other models in the market with warm and luxurious interiors to match. “We want to give it a smarter and more sophisticated look but one in which people could walk around in shorts and bathing suits after a day of fishing and not feel out of place. We are going back to our traditional roots by using classic teak interiors, clean lines juxt-a-posed with modern and innovative products and materials incorporating lively regional North Carolina artwork.
“Boat interiors can suffer from rooms with brass fittings that make them look like a gentlemen’s club.” Our customer feedback was—good, smart, contemporary design with custom furnishings that are durable and versatile for years of continued use. All elements are thoughtfully integrated into the GT70.
