Jim Weaver started fishing when he was around 20 years old, but it wasn’t until the 80s when he first competed in the White Marlin Open. A Maryland native, Weaver claims it was that tournament that got him hooked on sportfishing. Fast forward to the late 90s and Jim had started a construction business and now had his own 55-foot Ocean Yacht, as well as friends who had custom boats built. Something that Weaver would see as a challenge.

Splash Report: Weaver Boatworks 70′ Southern Pride

October 6, 2020 By InTheBite Editor

Southern Pride Races On

By Dale Wills

The latest 70’ Weaver Boatworks Southern Pride—splashed August 2020—could easily be called “Rocket Ship.” Simply put, she hauls ass! InTheBite recently had the opportunity to jump aboard and go for a ride. The very first thing I noticed was how very quiet the boat was. Both underway and idling. Clearing the final marker out of the Ocean Reef Club channel in Key Largo we headed south into a brisk 20-knot wind.

Jim Weaver began sportfishing in the early 1980s while running a successful construction company. But he wanted something more. His father-in-law Bill Payne and his wife, Pat had built wooden bay boats in the 60s and 70s, following in her parent’s footsteps. Jim and his captain, Chet Rohrbach, began construction of their personal boat Dream Weaver in 1998. Shortly after completion, the boat was sold. And so Weaver Boatworks was born.

Throughout his whole life, Jim has been a detail-orientated person. He strives to create the best in the sportfishing industry. In their state of the art facility located on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay they make dreams come true. Hallmarks of Weaver’s boats are quality, style and performance, delivered on time and on budget. “I am passionate about my work,” Jim Weaver says. “I know my customers will get everything they’ve dreamed of and more. That’s my promise from my family to yours.”

The latest Weaver to hit the water is the 80-foot Escapade. She’s a stunner not just for her good looks but also her astonishing performance. And with 3,000 gallons of fuel she’s also ready to take her owners to just about any sportfishing destination imaginable.

Destination: Crooked Island

February 22, 2023 By InTheBite Magazine

(Photo/Crooked Island Lodge)

By Joe Byrum

With its nearness to the southeast coast of the U.S., the Bahamas isn’t a new billfish destination. However, exploring the outer reaches of the islands can provide a break from the norm for anglers looking to expand their horizons. Crooked Island is in the far southeast corner of the Bahamas. It has a newly upgraded marina that provides close access to some of the best blue marlin fishing in the region. And when I say close, it’s no exaggeration. Crooked Island Lodge & Marina General Manager Andrew Barksdale tells me that their record was 19 minutes from picking up a customer at the nearby airstrip to hooking up a blue marlin!
