Electronics for Big Cats: Advanced Tech for Outboard-Powered Catamarans

Rising Popularity of Large Catamarans

Large outboard-powered catamarans have become a common sight in the Northern Gulf of Mexico and the East Coast.  With Invincible and Freeman being the two most common brands, a host of other boat builders have introduced large stepped-hull cats in recent years as well.  It is no surprise catamarans have become so popular, as their ability to handle rough seas coupled with fast cruising speeds accomplished through quad-outboard power have put them in a league of their own when it comes to navigating offshore waters.

It is also no surprise that the electronics packages on these boats can rival those of a sportfish yacht, with packages exceeding $100,000 not uncommon. Triple multi-function display screens, six-foot open-array radar, 3K chirp-capable transducers, satellite internet, and even the Furuno Omni sonar are being installed in these large cats, increasing their potential to compete with the offshore fishability of any other vessel.

Challenges in Tech Installation on Stepped-Hull Catamarans

One of the biggest challenges in outfitting a stepped-hull catamaran involves transducer and sonar placement on the hull. Unlike a monohull, where a transducer is typically mounted as close to the stern as possible, the best transducer mounting location on a stepped-hull cat is often just behind the first step. Maclin Smith, owner of HMS Marine Electronics out of Fairhope, Alabama works closely with Invincible dealer Grander Marine, and has done countless electronics installations on Invincible catamarans as well as others.  “Finding an area on a cat that has consistent clean water for a transducer mounting solution can be challenging,” Smith said.  “The running surfaces of these boats are extremely sensitive, so the only option for transducers are shoot-thru-hull. A thru-hull transducer or a fairing block mounting option can make a big difference on how the vessel rides while on step.”

With the Furuno Omni sonar becoming popular on larger center consoles, Smith says he has found the best place to mount the Omni hull unit to be in the pocket directly behind the step, which has minimal impact on the vessels running surface while up on step and under way. The exact placement of the transducers and sonar units can vary based on the length of the vessel, as the areas on the hull that provide clean water for the sonar to operate effectively differ due to the step placement on each hull.

Another consideration when outfitting catamarans and large outboard powered boats is the amount of shock and vibration that the electronics and systems will experience while underway.  Large screen multi-function displays designed for use on sportfish yachts and enclosed and protected helm stations typically will not fare as well over time as the smaller and more durable displays intended for center console use. Exposure to the elements should be considered when selecting products for operation on a large catamaran or center console, and some systems that are designed for sportfish use may not stand the test of time in an open boat.  Partnering with an experienced and reputable marine electronics company when outfitting your vessel is the best way to ensure the best performance out of the electronic operating systems on your vessel.

Advancements in Marine Communication and Navigation

“Game changer” is a term that gets thrown around often, but the capabilities that the new satellite internet system Starlink provides to the center console and large catamaran market are truly changing the game.  The Starlink antenna can be mounted directly to a hard-top, and the router and modem are relatively compact and do not require climate-controlled mounting options.  With a one-time equipment fee and no required contracts, users can pay monthly for true high speed low latency internet that is reliable while offshore.  I have personally used Starlink while offshore, and I was able to make crystal clear voice calls, check current weather conditions, and even stream the PGA golf tournament on my phone.

With the capabilities provided by Starlink and the new release of Hilton’s Offshore SAT2NAV system, crews will now be able to have the most up to date satellite imagery, sea surface temp, chlorophyll shots, and current flow data available at their fingertips.  The SAT2NAV system integrates all the capabilities of the Hiltons Offshore server directly into the multifunction display screens on the boat, allowing for viewing up to date imagery directly on the MFD while offshore.  The SAT2NAV is compatible with Garmin, Furuno, and Raymarine systems.
