The Big Rock Tournament Board of Directors & Staff are gearing up for an exciting week ahead featuring the first ever Big Rock Kids Billfish Tournament. After a record breaking Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in June, tournament officials are optimistic for participation in the inaugural Big Rock Kids Tournament.

A Prize Winning Blue at Big Rock with Young Gun Cole Pirrung

Nineteen-year-old Cole Pirrung has, like many anglers before him, been fishing for most of his life. Pirrung says he was always at the river and lake with friends and the first time he ever went offshore was with his grandparents to try bottom fishing when he was around 12 years old. His father, Dave Pirrung, also played a large part in Cole’s interest to go after bigger fish along the Atlantic coastline having fished the Big Rock when his sons were all young.

Pelagic Hunter II: Journey to the Top of Big Rock

“I’ve always wanted to be in the Big Rock,” Pelagic Hunter II Captain John Cruise III says thinking back on the many years he’s attended the tournament.

And in 2020, Cruise took his first step toward that goal by signing up for the Lady Angler Tournament. His wife would be competing, but fate, and foul weather, had other plans and it looked as if the Pelagic Hunter II wouldn’t be sharing the seas with other boats during those two days.

The eight NC Billfish Series tournaments have teamed up with weigh masters Randy Gregory and George Lott to recognize and award the best tournament boats and anglers in North Carolina. The mission of the NC Billfish Series is to promote North Carolina’s billfish tournaments, sportsmanship, marine conservation and competition in our world-renowned offshore fishery.

Check out this list of the top 5 Blue Marlin weighed in so far in 2017 Captain of the Year Divisions. The IGY Marinas Int’l Division leads with team Flyer, led by Captain Bryce Garvey fishing the Bermuda Big Game Classic who harvested a 871 lbs. Blue Marlin. Pretty work crews!

Results: Top boat had 4 marlin and Bull Run placed second with 3 marlin and a sailfish.

cuba_resultsJune 16, 2016- Today is the Lay Day for the tournament. Wednesdays fishing was a little better than the first day with approximately 30 releases. We are working on report for a leaderboard and the top billfish release boats. Stay tuned.

June 14, 2016 was the first day of fishing. 93 teams competing. “During the first day there were 20 catches Marlin. The boat “Barefoot” was the luckiest of #fishing day with the catch-release of 2 Blue Marlin.”
