Caison Yachts’ Last Request

July 22, 2022 By InTheBite Magazine

Sitting in his truck, the A/C at full blast, Donnie Caison stares out across the boat yard in North Carolina where Caison Yachts’ first build rests, getting some routine work done. “I was kind of a late bloomer, I fished in lakes. I was in my 20s before I started saltwater fishing,” Donnie recalls when asked how he got into offshore fishing.

“I went to work for a guy as a general superintendent in the late 80s at a site development company, and he took me fishing. We went to the local ledge called the 23-mile rock and caught sailfish, king mackerel and other species. I came home and immediately bought a 20-foot center console.” On his maiden voyage fishing for Spanish mackerel, he blew the powerhead on the motor, forcing Caison to find a replacement outboard. He ended up buying a 150 Mercury. “Of course, it was a 25-inch shaft instead of a 20-inch shaft, so I had to raise the top of the transom. So that was my first fiberglass work,” Caison says.

The construction of marine vessels has long relied on multiple kinds of materials. Starting with wood, other techniques developed and continue to evolve including steel, aluminum, fiberglass, high tech foam cores, exotics like carbon fiber, and…wood. The sportfishing world employs many of these for different reasons. This discussion is centric to higher performance planing hulls, so we’ll examine wood and various composites, metal doesn’t make sense for this segment. Like they say, there’s more than one way to skin a cat.

71 Garlington Miss Behavin: An Inside Look ▶️

March 2, 2022 By InTheBite Digital Editor

Owner David Finkelstein takes us on a tour of his new 71′ Garlington Miss Behavin. Ask anyone who has taken delivery of a new sportfishing boat similar to the 71-foot Garlington Miss Behavin and it’s not uncommon for little nuances to surface during the initial “shakedown” period. For Miss Behavin, the shakedown was a 1,900-mile journey from builder Garlington Landeweer’s factory in Stuart, Florida to Los Sueños Marina in Costa Rica.

To Refit or Not to Refit, Now That’s the Question

boat refit

With apologies to Shakespeare and his melancholy Danish prince—neither of whom were ever boaters—this article is fittingly titled. A boatowner must consider many factors before commissioning a refit, and any refit must be carefully planned and coordinated.

Remembering Viking Yachts Co-Founder Robert T. Healey Sr. (1929-2021)

December 14, 2021 By InTheBite Digital Editor

robert healey

New Gretna, New Jersey, December 14, 2021—Robert T. Healey Sr., the co-founder of the Viking Yacht Company who helped build the company into an industry leader and led the fight that repealed the Federal Luxury Tax on yachts in the early 1990s, passed away last week at the age of 92. “My father was a true leader, and his vision will always guide us,” said his son, Robert Healey Jr.

“He believed that the people around him – his family, friends and employees – lifted him to success and it was his obligation to leave the world a better place.” Bob Healey Sr. and his brother Bill established Viking Yachts in 1964, and the company went on to become the largest manufacturer of sport fishing yachts in the world. But that success may have never been achieved without the determination and perseverance of Bob Healey.
