The Montauk Canyon Challenge: The Fastest Growing Tournament In The Northeast

April 25, 2019 By InTheBite Editor

Fish Anytime Between July 12th and July 20th!

There is nothing worse than being excited to fish a tournament only to have the weather not cooperate. The hours spent organizing gear, preparing bait, and pre-fishing your plan, can end up a fruitless effort thanks to Mother Nature. This is one of the reasons that the Montauk Canyon Challenge has become such a popular tournament in the Northeast. When you fish the MCC, you literally get to choose to fish anytime between July 12th and July 20th!

“We’ve really grown in popularity from where the tournament started and a lot it has to do with the flexibility in when you’re allowed to fish,” said Rich Lucas, one of the MCC’s tournament directors. “We also had 44 boats last year compete and we gave away over $250,000 in cash and prizes. Everyone loved the Awards Dinner and Party.”

Last year’s tournament also netted a record number of fish thanks to a hot bite. More than 150 BigEyes, 150 Yellowfin, and several white and blue Marlin were caught during the event. The heaviest tuna caught was 210.1lbs.!

Anglers are allowed to choose to fish either two 19-hour day trips or can do one 38-hour overnight trip.  All boats will return to Gurney’s Yacht Club in Montauk for an official weighing.

The cost of entering a boat into the Montauk Canyon Challenge is $1,600, but anyone who registers online before May 15, 2019 will receive a $300 discount.

Below are the 2019 prizes for the MCC:

$25,000 1st Place Top Tuna

$5,000 1st Place Yellowfin Tuna

$1,000 2nd Place Yellowfin Tuna

$2,500 1st Place Albacore Tuna

$1,000 2nd Place Albacore Tuna

$2,500 1st Place Top Three Yellowfin

$1,000 2nd Place Top Three Yellowfin

$1,000 1st Place Mahi Mahi

$1,000 1st Place Mako Shark

$1,000 1st Place Swordfish

$1,000 1st Place Wahoo

$500 Top Female Angler

$500 Top Junior Angler (14)

Visit the Montauk Canyon Challenge website to view the Calcutta’s and the full list of rules and regulations with the tournament.

Proceeds from the MCC also go to help Maggie’s Mission, a non-profit charitable organization that is focused on raising awareness of pediatric cancers, funding ground-breaking research, and helps families affected by these awful diseases. Maggie’s Mission was created in honor of Maggie Schmidt who was a beautiful and vibrant young lady who was suddenly diagnosed at the age of 16 with a very rare and aggressive cancer. The MCC is proud to help contribute to such an effective and compassionate organization.

On July 20th, the last day of the tournament, an Awards dinner and after-party will be hosted for everyone at Gurney’s Yacht Club from 6:30pm – 10:30pm. Last year’s party had everyone dancing until the late hours and we only expect it to continue this year!

MCC main sponsor Staten Island Yacht Sales will have several boats on display at the tournament including some of the newest Viking Yachts available. “Both the Viking 58 Convertible and the 38 Billfish will be available to tour for everyone in the Montauk Canyon Challenge,” said Jay Hendrix, Vice President of SI Yachts. “Both Vikings arrive in early Summer so they will be ready for the season up here in New York assuming they last that long.” The Viking 58C made its debut at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show last November and boasts a 165-square foot fighting cockpit. The new 38 Billfish just made its premier at the recent Viking VIP event in February and has improved the already popular design of the 37 Billfish.

The Viking 58C will be at the MCC tournament with a grey hull and loaded with options.

“We are shooting for more than 50 boats this year to fish the MCC,” continued Rich Lucas. “Everyone I’ve talked to that participated in previous years is fishing it again because they had so much fun. It’s a friendly tournament that has a flexible schedule, and you can win a heck of a lot of money. We hope to see a lot of new faces this year and don’t forget to take advantage of the early bird registration discount!”

Gearing Up for 2019 Carolina Billfish Classic

April 11, 2019 By InTheBite Editor

CHARLESTON, SC—  The Carolina Billfish Classic,  the third leg of the SC Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series, June 19-22, 2019, is gearing up for another successful year. In 2017, CBC returned to its original home, The Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina.  With a full-service marina, coupled with The Beach Club’s luxury amenities, Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina is the only waterfront resort located directly on the Charleston Harbor overlooking the historic, downtown skyline. It represents everything that tournament participants look for when planning their season. The Resort offers two seaside, heated pools, sprawling pool deck, complete with private cabanas, The Estuary Spa, fitness center, three on-site restaurants, private beachfront, complimentary bike rentals and more.

Deidre Menefee, Tournament Director explains, “With the tournament growing each year since we moved back to the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina, we can continue to reach the numbers from our first year in 1998, when we had 102 boats, and even beyond that”.

Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina is the site that currently holds the Blue Marlin State Record, caught by “Corky” Taylor aboard Rascal in 2005 during the Charleston Harbor Billfish Tournament.

Beyond the cash prizes CBC promises, anglers also have the possibility to win a 2019 Ford F150 for a State Record Blue Marlin, Dolphin, Wahoo, or Tuna. Menefee and CHRM are working together to bring a, fun-filled week for boat owners, captains, crews, friends and family. Great fishing, food, drinks, music, and incredible accommodations for all to enjoy!

Final Approvals Stamped: Development Plans for Marina Flamingo

February 20, 2019 By InTheBite Editor

We are proud to announce and welcome aboard Marina Flamingo as the Presenting Sponsor of the popular Flamingo Fishing Rodeo. The 2018 event grew to 17 boats and 71 anglers. This tournament was developed as a way of bringing families and especially kids into tournament fishing. Low entry fees, minimal rules and lots of prizes make this one a winner. And it’s not just marlin and sailfish, either; participants can fish for a wide variety of species too. It’s a great way to fish with the family and have a great time in a terrific destination. This event will continue to grow as the construction of the Marina Flamingo moves forward.

After years of anticipation the most exciting part of the growth in the Flamingo Beach area of Guanacaste is the resurgence and re-launch of the full service Marina in Playa Flamingo. Final approvals have been stamped and development of the Flamingo Marina is breaking ground later this summer/fall. The new Marina at Playa Flamingo, Costa Rica, will be a huge boost to local real estate opportunities and tourism business in the area.
This state-of-the-art full service marina is projected to be home for 178 boat slips. It will offer residential and commercial spaces for lease, as well as a Hotel and Conference Center. The project will be developed in three phases, the first one initiating Summer/Fall 2019. The dredging of the basin, building of break walls, and placement of the majority of slips will take place during this first phase, as well as the construction of the East side commercial building and parking area.
Plans to develop the new Marina Flamingo were finalized in 2018 and now, the public can finally look forward to this exciting new development.  According to an article from the Tico Times, the intention of the new marina was always to “service the yachting, sailing and fishing community in the region”.  Flamingo is one of the hottest areas in Costa Rica for sport fishing, water sports and is home to some of the Pacific’s best beaches.

June 15, 2018 By InTheBite Editor

As of June 11th, 2018, 656 dolphinfish have been tagged and released throughout our tagging zones by 66 captains in 170 outings.  Of those releases, 8 are recaptures recorded along the U.S. East Coast, 2 are return migrants from fish released last August, and 4 are satellite tags movements.  In the first week of June alone, the Killin’ Time IIFishing Team, led by Captain Don Gates, tagged and released 207 dolphin, 5 of which have been recaptured (as of 6/11).  This effort alone represents a 2.4% recapture rate.  To read more about movements of dolphin along the U.S. East Coast over the past few months, click here.
