Tropic Star Lodge Dolphinfish Research Program Update

April 4, 2022 By InTheBite Digital Editor

March 31, 2022, Dolphinfish Research Program— Last November marked the third field expedition for the Dolphinfish Research Program to Tropic Star Lodge to determine the horizontal and vertical movements of dolphinfish in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP).  This field expedition and research is funded by the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation.

During the most recent expedition, a total of 12 satellite tags were deployed, and the program received data from 9 so far with 2 more scheduled to report in May.  Since 2018, researchers have deployed 20 satellite tags on dolphinfish ranging in size from 36″ to 56″ fork-length.  When combined with TSL’s conventional tagging participation, which has amounted in the tag and release of 572 dolphinfish, of which 20 have been recaptured,  a preliminary dataset is taking shape that shows both fine scale and broad movements, habitat use, and fishery  dynamics in this part of ETP.  Detailed updates on the progress of the research and program expansion in the ETP are available here.  A special thanks goes out to the entire TSL staff as well as the captains and mates for their help in making this effort possible!

Friday, November 20, 2020—This year has consisted of many challenges, and for anglers around the world, one of them has been having to put international fishing plans on hold. Outfitters of all shapes and sizes have had to turn guests away due to COVID-19 restrictions, and the world-renowned Tropic Star Lodge was no exception. Tides turned in Mid-November though, when the Tropic Star team were able to fire up boat engines, dust off tackle boxes, and welcome back exuberant anglers to reap the rewards that the
8-month-untouched waters of Piñas Bay had to offer.

The Marlin Bar– the Latest from Tropic Star

April 6, 2020 By InTheBite Editor

IMAGE OF THE MARLIN BAR AT TROPIC STAR LODEGE IN PANAMA

A sportfishing institution now has its latest landmark: The Marlin Bar at Tropic Star Lodge. Tropic Star Lodge is one of sportfishing’s most historic operations—and it has the photographs to prove it. From fishing pictures with John Wayne to all manner of giant yellowfin and huge black marlin, Tropic Star has it. Tropic Star recently unveiled its Marlin Bar. New and updated, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a cold beer and swap fishing stories. After all, you’re sure to make a few stories of your own while fishing at Tropic Star…

For a reminder of how great the fishing is at the lodge, check out this story we published last year.

The Bertram Bar, called Babe, allows you to drink your favorite rum drink at the helm of a 31’ Bertram all while overlooking the bay and Tropic Star’s fleet. You can certainly add this to the list of places we’re headed as soon as things get back to normal. In the meantime, here is a back stage pass from your friends at InTheBite….

Tradition and Trajectory at Tropic Star Lodge

January 2, 2020 By InTheBite Editor

By Elliott Stark

Since 1963, Tropic Star Lodge has been attracting anglers from around the world to one of the most remote, beautiful and inaccessible places in the New World. The fishing out of Piñas Bay, Panama is good enough to justify travel here. It has been drawing anglers since Zane Grey came here under sail power in the 1920s. No matter how many marlin and tuna there may be, describing Tropic Star Lodge simply in terms of fishing somehow misses the point.
